Hyderabad earned the nickname "City of Pearls" due to its centuries-long history as a global hub for the trade and processing of high-quality pearls. Although it is a landlocked city, its reputation as a pearl market flourished under the patronage of the wealthy Nizams who ruled the city from the 18th to the mid-20th century.

The Nizam's patronage

• Passion for pearls: The Nizams of Hyderabad, known for their opulent and lavish lifestyles, had a deep admiration for pearls, viewing them as symbols of wealth, royalty, and power. They adorned themselves and their wives with lavish pearl ornaments for all occasions.
• Attracting global trade: News of the Nizams' passion for pearls attracted merchants and artisans from around the world to Hyderabad, particularly from the Persian Gulf, a renowned source of high-quality Basra pearls. The Nizams' demands for the finest pearls helped to establish the city as a major trading centre.
• Refinement hub: The pearls were not naturally harvested in Hyderabad but were imported as raw goods. They were then processed by local artisans who mastered the delicate skills of drilling, bleaching, and stringing.

A legacy of craftsmanship

• Skilled artisans: Hyderabad's reputation was built on the exceptional skills of its craftsmen, especially those in the village of Chandan pet, just outside the city. For generations, entire families in this village have specialized in the art of hand-drilling pearls.
• Intricate jewellery: The artisans transformed the raw pearls into exquisite pieces of jewellery,
Including:

• Satlada: A traditional seven-strand necklace featuring hundreds of pearls, often embellished with diamonds and emeralds.
• Panchlada: A five-layered version of the Satlada.
• Chandbali: A distinctively styled moon-shaped earring.
• Kamar Bandh: A royal waist belt.

A legacy of craftsmanship

• Evolution of the market: When the supply of natural pearls from the Persian Gulf declined in the 20th century, Hyderabad's merchants adapted by importing and refining cultured pearls, ensuring the city remained a prominent hub.
• Present-day market: Today, Hyderabad's pearl market is a vibrant mix of traditional shops and modern outlets. The old city, particularly the areas around Charminar like Laad Bazaar and Pathergatti, remains a key destination for pearl shopping. Notable heritage jewellers, some with histories spanning over a century, continue to uphold the city's legacy.
